But what do you do AFTER you spot a counterfeit bill?
- DO NOT confront the person who passed you the bill or return the bill to that person.
- Once the person leaves, write down everything you can remember about the individual, including license plate number (if possible).
- Notify the Secret Service Office or your local police department as soon as possible.
- Write your initials and date in the white border of the bill and store it in a plastic bag.
Once you hand the bill over to the authorities, the Treasury Department will remove the bill from circulation and later use it as evidence for the prosecution of the counterfeiter.
